2020-02-10: An Instrument in His Hands

Elder Sorensen - Sunday lunch at his pensionista's house

HEY! How’s it going?! This week was pretty AWESOME! We worked super good and found a bunch of awesome, awesome people. Things are getting better. God is good.

We had interviews with President and a class from the assistants. Something that really stuck out to me is that Jesus is the center of EVERYTHING. I learned that we need to make sure this is clear as missionaries. But I think it applies to everyone. Elder Holland gave an awesome talk in October 2019 General Conference that explains it really well.

A few new awesome people that are really starting to progress. We found this super awesome family a few weeks ago, and they are really starting to take this seriously. The dad is named Demetrio, and his wife is Ana Maria and their three young kids. We´ve taught them a few times, but this week, while explaining better the importance of the Book of Mormon, the Spirit was super strong in the lesson, and we were able to help them realize how much God can do to help them in their personal problems and goals.

We have also been working with this super, super awesome family. The daughter is the most interested, Louisa. We had a few good appointments with them this week, and then Louisa came to church on Sunday!!! WOOOO!!!

Also, God is good. A family we had been teaching that lives in the other area of Cerrito just moved into our area. WOOO!! Hahaha. This week we focused on helping them get closer to Christ in their homes, studying the Book of Mormon and praying as family. They are awesome. Nicol (the daughter) came to church!! She’s only 12, but she’s super smart and is the most interested.

We’ve been contacting a ton this week, looking for the really prepared people that are waiting to hear this message and act on it. We found several less-active members and their non-member family. We found people that had talked with missionaries before, but most importantly, we found a ton of people that had never talked with missionaries. Perhaps the best were Reiner and his mom Reina. They are from Venezuela. They have gone to lots of churches and have tons of questions. We were able to help answer their questions, and then we taught about the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Spirit was SOOOO strong in that lesson. During the lesson, they were both like, “This is the truth. I believe it; I feel it.” Near the end of lesson, the mom said while crying, “I’ve been looking for this. I didn’t know what exactly I was looking for, but this feeling and this message is what God sent you guys to give me. You guys didn’t teach us. You didn’t find us. God did. He talked to us through you, and He found us.” WOW! The Spirit was soo strong. This is God’s work. He is leading it along. We are only instruments in His hands. We really don’t do much. He does everything. I’ve learned we just need to be willing to work in whatever place He needs us. Just like a worker using his tools to do what he wants done, God uses us to do His will. God is good.

The Book of Mormon is the word of God. It’s not perfect, but it has everything we need. Christ is perfect. The Book of Mormon can help us solve any problem, not because the book has all the answers, but because it teaches us about Jesus and He is perfect. He can help us to overcome anything. Study the Book of Mormon daily, and personally.

From conversation with Elder Sorensen: he is back in a two-some, which he loves, as one of his companions (Elder Ypushima) got an emergency transfer.

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
