2018-01-07: Week 1 of New Cambio/Transfer

Elder Sorensen y burro

This week was a little crazy but super busy and tons of fun.

So Elder Bird, Elder Tellez (de Colombia) and I spent New Years at the family of their pensionista. We were allowed to be out until like 2a (permission from mission president, kind of relaxed, I know). Anyways, we ate dinner and played games and such, and then at 12a we lit off a ton of little fireworks and such and like literally the whole city Potosi was going, so it was pretty cool. Later we went back to the Zone Leaders house and slept for a little bit and then at 3a we had to go pick up some elders (who were traveling from Tupiza for their cambios). And then at 6:30a to take them and others to get taxis to Sucre. So we didn’t sleep much. After the others left, it was just me and Elder Tellez. We went to do a few more things for cambios, and then his companion arrived. Later after lunch, my comp (Elder Vergara) arrived and we made it out to Betanzos around 6:30ish.

So miércoles/Wednesday (our first day) was pretty awesome. We had a ton of good citas/appointments. We visited with Vernaldina (an investigator who basically only speaks Quechua) and later Renaldo (the Zapatero/shoemaker). They were both super good lessons, and Renaldo is preparing to be baptized the 26 de enero/Jan. Later we had clase de ingles, and it went pretty good. And then we met with Virigilio and Remedios (recent converts) and their family.

Jueves/Thursday we went out to Tecoya on bikes, which gets us pretty tired but it’s fun and a lot easier to visit more people. We visited with David, and we are super excited for him because he is finally going to get married this Saturday, and then probably baptized that afternoon. So we are super happy. Later we visited with a few less active families and then a recently reactivated family and one of the daughters (Mery) who might also get baptized this Saturday. She is super ready; she is just a little worried that she won’t be perfect after she is baptized, so we are helping her with that.

Viernes/Friday we had to go to Potosi in the morning for our district and zone meetings. In the afternoon we went out to Lagunillas and visited with the Flia Wallpa (some are active and others not) so we had a good noche de hogar (Family Night Lesson) with them. We used the balloon animals and explained how we have a super grande potential (a dog hahaha, chiste no más), but we explained how if I didn’t have somebody to show me or a book to show me, it would be very difficult to make a good balloon animal. The same is with us. If we don’t choose to follow Jesus Christ (the perfect example), and if we don’t choose to read and follow the teachings of the Libro de Mormon, it will be very difficult to reach our full potential as a child of God. Later we visited Virgilio and Remedios again and were trying to meet with their cousin Max (who could easily be baptized soon). But he wasn’t there.

Sabado/Saturday we were super duper busy. We met with Renaldo again. Later we met with Maribel and one of her sons (Roger). Maribel is preparing to get baptized the 26 of enero also, but she is a little afraid of talking about it with her husband. After lunch, we met with the Bishop to talk about things to help the ward better. Then we went on bikes out to Tecoya again. First we looked for Remberto (who wants to get baptized this Saturday also), but he wasn’t home. He wasn’t home when we passed by Jueves, soo we aren’t really sure what think. He also didn’t come to church yesterday, so we will be visiting him for sure this week. Afterwards we talked with David about his baptism and a few questions he had. Then we visited several less active families and got to know them better and shared a little message or noche de hogar. It was raining. (Oh ya, it has been raining here like almost every day for the past several weeks. Ok, not every day, but like every other day.) So the last family we were with took us back home.

Domingo/Sunday only one of our investigadores (Mery) came to church, so we were a little disappointed. But the primary president was there with a lesson and activity and everything ready, so the ward is progressing a little bit :) In the afternoon we looked for a few contacts we had and passed by a less active family. With the less active family, we had the mom bring her Book of Mormon, and we just said we are going to read wherever your bookmark is from the last time you read. (It has been a long time since she’s read). So she opened her book and we read where she was with her. Read Alma 9. It was really interesting and super spiritual to read that with her. We knew it was the Lord who was guiding us what to share, and we were kind of unsure what we would read with her, but it ended up being super good and extremely spiritual. Later that afternoon we came here to Potosi.

Today was a fun Pday. We played futbal (on a normal size field with fake grass). It was super fun. My companion started his mission here in Potosi, so for lunch we went to one of the families in his old ward. And that’s about it. Elder Vergara is super cool and a great missionary, so we get along great. I love Betanzos a ton, but I don’t think he does very much. Oh well. I love learning Quechua sooo much. Hahaha. I’m starting to understand better and put a few sentences together. It’s super fun to be able to understand and speak a little bit. I love it a ton. That’s about it from me out here in Betanzos :) Love ya guys and hope everything is going good for you.

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
