2018-12-17: Chicken Feet, Heart, and Stomach

Elders Bird, Salinas, Sorensen & Grotepas

Hola everyone :) This week was pretty normal, but still super duper awesome. I love Betanzos a ton. I did eat a few crazy things. I’m getting pretty out of shape, and I’m super tired but ... that’s the life of a missionary I guess. Hahaha.

Well, last Pday my comp cut my hair and did pretty good. Then while cutting his own hair, the power went out (hahaha), but then after a few minutes it came back. No worries. It was just funny to see him with one side cut and the other not at all.

Tuesday/Martes we spent the entire day looking for people. We looked for the people we had scheduled, and they weren’t home. Then we looked for the people we had for backup plans, and they weren’t home. Then we looked for every single other past contact or less active members, hahaha, but didn’t have any lessons with anybody. Oh well, it was still a super awesome day, and I didn’t feel the least bit disappointed. Hahaha. Sounds crazy, I know.

Wednesday/Mièrcoles was like the same thing, but we had Ingles class which several people came to, so that was good. Most people are either out of town for vacations or for the promotions of family (kind of like graduations, I think).

Thursday/Jueves we rode bikes out to Tecoya. (I’m still super out of shape, mainly because we don’t have water to shower every day, so I really only workout when we have water to shower. Hahaha. So only a few days a week.) Anyway, we found some pretty good new investigadores out there and had some super duper good lessons. We also had a Noche de Hogar (Family Night) with a family that has been recently reactivated in the church. The dad gave the lesson on the Atonement, and it was super, super good and very spiritual.

Friday/Viernes we went to Potosi for Zone Conference. It was good and lots of fun too. Each zone did two skits or songs. It’s pretty crazy but was lots of fun, hahaha. I was supposed to be like an elf guy. I miss wrestling like crazy, and this kind of sort of made up for it a little bit. President Montoya (our mission president) gave a super good lesson about pride. It’s a super interesting topic and like the main thing that can destroy anybody. It is soo broad and can be found in soo many different ways. A few types that President listed that I think are interesting are fear of man more than God, our motives for doing things, and not accepting correction or new ideas. I struggle with these things myself, but I’m trying to be better, and I would encourage each of you to do a self-check, to change what needs to be changed and work towards being a better person and helping those around you, more than yourself.

Saturday/Sabado we went out to Tecoya again, but by car since we got back to Betanzos super late from Potosi. We were glad we went by car because the few citas/appointments we had didn’t have time, hahaha.

Sunday/Domingo was pretty good. We taught a class on how to be better members and help the ward better. I love 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and the analogy of the church as a ward. I like how it says 'even the members that seem not needed are the most important'. I shared how when I broke the little bone under my pinky finger, I thought, “Oh well, it’s the little finger. I'll still wrestle with no problem.” But I learned that that finger does a TON to close the hand or grab something super tightly. Kind of an interesting lesson. In the church or in life, we might think somebody is not really needed or useful, but perhaps we should look differently and see their strengths and realize that they are very important and can be more than we think.

Today was a pretty nice Pday. We stayed here in Betanzos and basically just relaxed. This week I ate chicken feet, heart and something like the first stomach or something (not all in the same meal). The feet.... ehhh not super good basically just skin. The heart was pretty darn good. (I actually didn’t even notice it was heart until I was done eating it, and then the hermana said it was heart. Hahaha. And the stomach thing was alright. I’m trying to eat less and lose some weight, but it’s not working too well since I don’t work out every day. Oh well, I’m growing spiritually, and that’s really more important. I’m pretty excited for Christmas!

Love ya guys!

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
