2019-09-09: Going to Cocha!!

Elder Sorensen & Elder Vernon overlooking Potosi.
Well... it’s been super-duper cold here this whole week. It’s been raining and snowing off and on, but we still worked hard and had lots of fun.

So, martes/Tuesday we had meetings in the morning. After lunch we had a ton of super good citas/appointments planned, but literally almost every single one canceled. I think it’s amazing to see how God closes some doors but always opens others. We had a good amount of time to contact, and it actually went pretty well. God is good.

Miércoles/Wednesday was pretty sweet. We had a few awesome citas in the morning with an investigator and later with a recent convert, who is super awesome. We tried following up on a few past contacts but most fell through. After lunch we had a great visit with Celia. She has been an investigator for quite some time and keeps pushing her baptism to later. But miércoles she told us she really wants to be baptized and doesn’t want to wait and that she wants to be baptized in September sí o sí. She is awesome! We had a few good citas planned with some really good investigators, but they failed us. Darn. We did have an awesome visit with Carla and Gustavo in the night. THEY ARE AMAZING!!!! They are reading the Book of Mormon together. They are funny; Gustavo can’t see very well so he can’t read, so Carla reads but she can’t understand what she reads, so Gustavo listens and then explains to her what she read. Hahaha. They make an awesome team. They are super excited to get baptized. God is good. We also had a good visit with the Alá family. They are an awesome investigator family, but they are progressing very slowly. We are trying to change from just visits of “talking about the word of God” to visits helping them to “do what God wants and says.” It’s a little tricky though. That night we started an intercambio/exchange, and I went with Elder Lloyd down to Delicias. We were together all day jueves/Thursday, and it was pretty awesome. He is a super good missionary. We had several good visits and a bit of contacting that went super good. We had this one visit with the older mom of a member. The mom actually only speaks Quechua, so the member daughter and I taught her in Quechua. She told us she was sick and had a lot of problems, and so one day she went to church and then she got healthy and all her problems ended or resolved. So she wants to be baptized and come to church always, even though she understands nothing of Spanish. WOW!! She is super awesome and has tons of faith and is willing to act in faith. She´s amazing. I also did a baptismal interview for them, and it was super cool to see them help a family be baptized.

Jueves/Thursday night we ended the intercambio and then Viernes/Friday we went out to Betanzos. We had a great day visiting a few members and having a super awesome lesson with Mery. For my whole time in Betanzos, we tried super hard to help her be baptized, but she says she has lots of doubts and still isn’t ready. The same thing happened viernes. We were able to help her answer a few of her questions, but she still “isn’t ready.” It taught me that God has a plan for everyone, but everybody has their choice and that’s something that we can never take away.

Sábado we came back to Potosi and had a super awesome day. We visited the majority of our investigators, and it is sooo exciting to see them progressing and really wanting to be baptized. We had awesome visits with the Flores family, with Irena (a super awesome contact that is really progressing) and Wendy (the niece of a less active member).

Domingo/Sunday was AMAZING!!! Eight of our progressing investigators came to church!!!! It was awesome!! Carla and Gustavo came; they are soo awesome. Our pensionistas “boyfriend” but soon to be husband also came, and he is super awesome and really wants to be baptized. They just need to get married. Sara (a super awesome investigator with tons of questions) also came with her younger sister Noelia. They are amazing. Wendy also came and is super excited to get baptized. Several other awesome investigators came. It was so AMAZING.  We had a good day visiting several other people.

Sunday night we got our cambios/transfers. And..... I’m leaving Potosi. After over a year here, I’m headed to Cochabamba. I’m going to miss it here, but I’m ready to work in a new area and help more people. It’s been awesome in Potosi, and I’m going to miss Betanzos a ton, and Quechua, and all the awesome investigators we have right now that are progressing like crazy. But God has a bigger plan, and I’m only here to do what He wants. GOD IS GOOD. I love being a missionary and helping people come to Him and receive His help.

Les amo!!

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
