2018-10-15: Semana (Week) 7

This week was definitely a glass half full. Not full because we didn´t really work as much, but pretty good because I got to study a lot. I have made a few goals for this cambio/transfer, including reading the entire Libro de Mormon en espanol, completing half of my Spanish language study book, and helping 2 people get baptized. If the next 5 weeks are like this past week, the first two metas/goals will be super easy, but the last one will be pretty tough.

Making pizza!
Anyways, so for this week, martes/Tuesday we had some pretty good citas/appointments and stuff to do, and I was pretty excited for the day that morning. But then we went to the ex-terminal (a place where taxis and flotas/fleets leave Potosí for Sucre or other towns) and said goodbye to the elders that were leaving to different areas. Then later in the afternoon, we went back and received the elders who were coming to Potosí from different areas. Then we went to our citas/appointments and the first 2 didn´t have time, and then we did get to meet with a recent convert who just moved here from Cochabamba. That went pretty good and she still has lots of questions about the gospel. Then we went to the dentist for my comp because he chipped a tooth. We were there for a while. And we have to go back tomorrow.

Miercoles/Wednesday was like a nacional/national protest kinda thing. We got a call from our zone leaders the night before telling us we can do stuff like normal, just don’t wear our tags, so people wouldn’t connect us to the States and try to … (I don’t know what, hahaha). They also said if it’s like super sketchy, we could just stay home. Leaving the house without our tags was kinda weird though. Hahaha.

Jueves/Thursday we made panqueques/pancakes with a recent convert and her whole family (which includes her sister, who has been a pretty long-term investigator and didn’t really feel like getting baptized when we invited her a few weeks ago). It was pretty good, but we were there for a super long time. After that we went and met with our ward mission leader, and he was pretty cool. He has been home from his mission for like 10 yrs and seemed really excited to help us with investigadores and such. After that we went to the exterminal and received Elder Grotepas and the new elder he is training. So I’m not the new guy anymore. Also the new elder (Elder Bird) went to the Mexico CCM and said he brought a ton of mail for me. But for some reason he left it with the secretaries in Cochabamba, so I will get it week 4.

Viernes/Friday we had district meeting in the morning and then in the afternoon I made a list of a bunch of past contacts we have that we haven’t returned to and a few past investigadores I thought would be good to look for. Well, after lunch, my comp said he had a really bad headache so we came home, and he slept the rest of the day. So I studied language, the Book of Mormon in English and Spanish and the Bible. I also drank mate the whole time, so that was nice. I would’ve loved to work, but I got a lot out of the stuff I studied.

Sabado/Saturday we went to the fería/market and then lunch. Then we made panqueques with an investigator. After that we went to a stake activity. It was pretty fun and the guy with the mic was trying to get people excited, and it reminded me of high school assemblies. I don’t know why but I got super excited and started cheering like crazy and getting all the miembros in my ward excited. Hahaha. It was pretty fun. :)

Domingo/Sunday we had church which went good. We had a few non-miembros who came with friends but none of the investigadores we have taught came so that was a bummer. After church, I studied a bunch more and then we went to the Flia Copa and had a quick Noche de Hogar (Family Home Evening) and then made pizza which was super duper good. I got the recipe from the hermana and am definitely going to try it. That about sums up this week.

Today we played chess with other elders, then futsall a la estaca. It was a typical Pday, but I love it. Hahaha.

I love studying the Libro de Mormon because it not only helps my Spanish a lot but also I learn lots spiritually. I love 2 Nephi chapter 4 and the thoughts and testimony of Nephi after all his trials and experiences. I love how he still chose to be happy and says they were the happiest people. I love how he chose to trust in the Lord to help him through all things. I know the Lord gives us hard things to learn and grow. At times it’s really hard to understand the Lord’s reasons, but if we continue pressing forward with faith, we can become lots stronger spiritually. Thanks for all the emails. Hope ya guys have an awesome week!! Love ya and thanks for all the prayers!

Con amor
Elder Sorensen

Our pensionista made us tamales,
but it was like a dessert and had cinnamon and such
and then the middle was full of cheese.

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
