2019-11-18: Writing from Sao Paulo, Brazil MTC

Hola hola!! This week was crazy. So much has changed. Ok, so Tuesday we weren’t allowed to leave our houses. Wednesday we were allowed to work in Pdays (casual) clothes. Elder Norton and I had an awesome day working. We worked hard and had several super good citas/lessons that day. We were super excited.

Thursday, we thought we´d be able to work, but we had to stay home again. And then while we were at lunch, we got a call from the assistants telling us that all North Americans were getting taken out of the country. Man. That was awful. We were sooo sad and then angry, and sad. We weren’t allowed to tell anybody either. That was the hardest part. We weren’t allowed to tell anybody we were leaving, and we couldn’t say goodbye to anybody. That was tough. It was totally normal in Cochabamba. At least it seemed like that in my area. But watching the news and talking to people, the military was there in Cochabamba, and there were other people marching and doing blockades and little by little they were getting more upset and starting to fight. So it was getting pretty dangerous, and we needed to get out.

So then Friday early in the morning we flew from Cochabamba to Santa Cruz. We got there and had lunch and stayed in the stake center there all day. It was pretty fun. Almost all the gringos (North Americans) from our mission were there, and we just talked and played games and relaxed.

Saturday most of the gringos flew out to Brazil (to the MTC). Saturday I and a few other missionaries stayed in Santa Cruz because they didn’t have our flights. It was kind of upsetting because the Santa Cruz elders are all staying in their mission. It’s not super dangerous there since most of the people there wanted the old president of Bolivia out. So we worked with several sets of elders there in Santa Cruz. We had a good day working like normal, and we had several good citas. It was kind of a sad day because I was thinking about how much I’m really going to miss Bolivia and its people.

Sunday morning we finally flew out of Santa Cruz, Bolivia and made it to the Brazilian MTC. We met up with all the other missionaries from our mission. We met with the MTC president and then had interviews with him, and he told us our new mission assignment. I’m going to the Colombia Cali mission!! I’m pretty excited! All the elders from Cochabamba are going to 1 of the 5 missions in Colombia. The sisters are all going back to missions in the states. Crazy!

Today we were able to visit the temple here in Sao Paulo, Brazil. And then tomorrow morning at 7a we fly out to Colombia. Word around here is that we will go to the MTC in Colombia for a little bit before separating to our different missions. We are all super, super excited. It’s super sad that we had to leave Bolivia. I learned a lot there and will forever love Bolivia and the people there. I know I’m doing the Lord’s work, and it doesn’t matter where I am; I still need to help and teach the people just the same. God is good.

Les amo muchisimo!!

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
