2019-05-06: Transfers Week

This week was pretty awesome!! Haha. Well every week is awesome, but this week was more awesome.

Ok so, martes/Tuesday after our reunions/meetings we came back to Betanzos and after lunch, we went to work. We first went to visit a contact that we have talked with several times but hadn’t taught a good lesson yet. Well, this time she was there with two of her friends, and we had a really good lesson with them and answered tons of their questions about the Book of Mormon and such. It was sweet. Later we visited Fernardo (a guy we taught like 2 weeks ago but we haven’t been able to find since). He has lots of different ideas about certain topics that kind of get us off track, but he has lots of faith and really wants to learn more about God. Later we visited Hermana Sofia (a member) and her friend was there, and we read 3 Nephi chapter 14 with them. It was an awesome day, and we found tons of new investigators.

Mièrcoles we helped our pensionista and family (who we share the house with). We helped them because they bought a big, new water tank and a pump, so now we have water to shower every day. (By the way I think this was the first week in my six months here in Betanzos that I’ve showered every day, hahaha.) So we spent most of the day installing the pump and doing the plumbing for it all. (Thanks to the guys at the mine who taught me all that so well.) We also did a little electrical work in our room so we could put a heater in our room (which works great now and we aren’t freezing as much). In the evening we visited Julia (an investigator) and 2 of her friends were also there. They had tons of questions for us, and we loved being able to use the words and verses of the Book of Mormon to answer their questions.

Jueves/Thursday we visited a less active member (that we recently contacted not knowing she is member). We also went to Tecoya and while looking for a recent convert (at a member’s house), we found out that one of the kids isn’t baptized and we thought he was. So now we have a baptism this coming weekend :) Awesomeness. We also visited the Flia Estrada (Estrada family) and read in 2 Kings 5 about Naaman--an awesome story that contains lots of good lessons.

Viernes/Friday we returned to the lady we visited martes (her name is Teofila), and we found her there with one of the same ladies from martes and two other ladies. So of course, we taught them and answered their questions. It was interesting to see them answer each other’s questions and a few times argue a little bit about things. One would ask a question and then like 2 others would answer with their thoughts/ beliefs, and sometimes it was a good answer and other times it was interesting to see how they had some of the truth but not all of it. It was a very good lesson, and I really enjoyed it. Later, we went out to Lagunillas (another pueblito/little town). We had a Noche de Hogar (Family Night Lesson) with the Flia Huallpa. We taught about repentance, and then I used Captain Lonnie´s little rope trick. Hahaha. It worked perfectly and they were all blown away. Thanks Lonnie!! That night (after we got home) we read the Book of Mormon in Quechua (like we do every night). Viernes we finished reading the Book of Mormon in Quechua, so that was awesome of course. Kind of funny that I’ve read the Book of Mormon in Quechua and marked it more in Quechua than I have in Spanish. Hahaha.

Sabado/Saturday we had a good day and in the evening we read Mosiah 24 with Hermana Daria and 3 of her grandkids (who are all members but kind of less active).

Domingo/Sunday was pretty good but crazy. In church we sang in Quechua, like for the hymns and such (normally we do in Spanish).  I shared my testimony (in Quechua) and read and shared a little about Moroni 10:32-33 (those two verses contain a ton of awesome and important truths). In the youth class, I did the Lonnie rope trick again, and it worked beautifully :) We taught the temple prep class after church, which also went good. After lunch, we visited a few members before teaching the institute class. After the class we came home and studied a little bit and then made cinnamon rolls and waited for the phone call with our cambios/transfers.

Well it finally came a little after 10p and.... my comp and I are staying together in Betanzos!!! WOOOOO!! Hahaha. We were both pretty excited. I’ve been here for 6 months already, but I still love it like crazy. We are going to be busy this cambio/transfer with Quechua, as well as helping the ward go to the temple. We had a great week, and it was amazing to see the hand of the Lord in His work. He really did lead us to find people that are ready to be taught, and He led people to us who really want to learn. God is good. I know this is His work. That’s about it for this week!

Today for Pday we played soccer, and then afterwards I wrestled another missionary (who is from Utah). It was awesome, but we are both extremely out of shape and I doubt it lasted a minute. Hahaha. But we are both staying here this cambio, so we will be wrestling a lot more often :) I miss wrestling like crazy. Hahaha.

Les amo!!

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
