2019-02-25: Goofy Week

2019-02-25: Goofy Week

Well this week was.... goofy, hahaha. I loved it, but it was just kind of funny. It made me laugh.

Martes/Tuesday Elder Bird and I went to Betanzos for intercambios/exchanges and so he could do an interview for Max, who was getting baptized. It was cloudy all day and pretty cold but only rained a little bit. We looked for a few people and then went to a cita/appointment with a member family (Flia Perez). We watched a little Book of Mormon animation, and it was actually pretty cool and effective. I also felt the Spirit, so I guess it was good. I’d never used a video in a lesson, and I started thinking how back home, like every lesson in church or something had a video. Anyway, as we were leaving, something happened with Elder Bird’s bike, like the gear box was bent and the chain wouldn’t move. That was kind of weird. So we walked the rest of the day. Elder Bird interviewed Max, and it went super good.

Mièrcoles/Wednesday in the morning I woke up not feeling so well. We went and bought a new gear box and then visited with Renaldo for a little bit, and then we came back home and changed the part on the bike. My comp and Elder Nieto got to Betanzos around 11a. We finished intercambios and then Elder Bird and Nieto left for Potosi. We had lunch, and then I slept the rest of the afternoon. We had a good day planned, and I really wanted to work but my comp was like no you should rest. I had a fever and kind of slept off and on all night. I would get really hot and then really cold. It was pretty weird, and at one point in the night, I found myself sitting like kind of in the fridge because I was sweating and super-hot. Hahaha. It was weird.

Jueves/Thursday we got up, and I was feeling better. We wanted to work, so after lunch we biked out to Tecoya to look for some investigadores and visit with a few member families. On the way there, my comp ran over some wire, and it got all tangled up in his bike. We took it out and thought we were lucky it didn’t puncture the tire. Well, like 20 minutes later, my comp got 2 thorns in his tire and all the air left. Dang. We started laughing and thought ‘dang now what’. We were quiet for a little bit, and then we heard thunder and saw big rain clouds coming. And so we laughed more and then started walking. Fortunately the Lord protects and watches over his servants. So we made it to a member’s house, and he had stuff to patch the tire so we did that. Later (after visiting a few people) we visited with the Estrada family and are still helping them get ready for the temple. That day, we taught them about family history and helped them fill out some folletos/pamphlets about themselves and their ancestors. At some point we will figure out how to help them put their stuff online. I thought it was pretty interesting that I had a calling in Family History at home, and now I can use it to help this family. It was an example to me that the Lord has been preparing me my whole life.

Viernes/Friday we planned to go out to Lagunillas, but there were no cars going out there, so that ruined our plans and we laughed again. We visited a few people in Betanzos and had a pretty good day.

Sabado/Saturday was finally a good day that nothing crazy went wrong. We cleaned the pila (baptismal font) in the morning and got the water filling. We came back a while later, and the water was full but it was dirty. I still haven’t seen the font full of crystal clear water. I think it’s just the water or the pipes. Max’s baptism was super awesome, and then afterwards we played futsal with the jovenes/youth. It was a great day.

Domingo/Sunday we woke interestingly. I got up right at 6:27 to my alarm and was walking to the bathroom and then heard something walking above me, like an animal. Well, our ceiling is a false ceiling with the squares tiles (like the ones in our dentist office or schools). I clapped my hands trying to scare it to leave, and then a second later a pig fell into our room with most of the ceiling tile. That was pretty funny, and it was definitely different to have a pig fall through our ceiling. (It’s like a pet to our pensionista.) I got rid of the pig, got ready and then my comp and I gave talks in church. I would have liked to give my talk in Quechua, but I figured I should probably just talk so they can understand me, and plus I’m not super confident in my Quechua still. I confirmed Max and then later in church, ordained David to the Aaronic Priesthood (the guy I baptized in January). That was super cool for me. After church it rained super hard and then started hailing large marble-size balls. It was crazy. I’d never seen hail that big. That night we came to Potosi.

Today we planned futbal like normal, and I really enjoy it. This week was crazy but also super awesome, and I loved it. It was cool to see with something soo good (like the baptism of Max) there was soo much opposition during the week trying to discourage us. Fortunately I like to laugh instead of get angry or upset, so it was still an awesome week. I love ya guys and thanks for all the emails!

2020-03-02: Craziest Appointment So Far

Hellos!! THIS WEEK WAS AWESOME!!! Hahaha. We worked super hard and are seeing lots of progress. Attitude is everything in the mission. A good attitude and hard work will always bring good results. GOD IS GOOD.  We have several awesome people preparing to be baptized soon.  Nicol (13 years old) is going to get baptized this Saturday. She’s incredibly smart and is really taking this seriously. She is sooo ready to be baptized. We had a really good talk, telling her to be nicer to her mom, because that’s what Christ would do and if she wants to get baptized she needs to be more Christlike. She understood :) and took it really well. She’s very mature. Mucha nicol (an expression that means “way to go” “you’re awesome”). Rainir is a baller. He’s an industrial engineer and very smart. He’s planning to get baptized the 21st. He just wants an answer from God to be sure. He’s reading and praying every day. GOLD! He’s awesome. We found this lady named Alba...

2019-04-01: Another week in Betanzos

Well this week was pretty darn good. We had cambios/transfers last week, and I’m with Elder Puma (from Cusco, Peru). We worked really hard, and it was an awesome week. He speaks Quechua already so we are visiting a ton more people (that only speak Quechua), and it’s been pretty crazy and fun. Sometimes I understand everything, but other times, I don’t understand a darn thing. Hahaha. I think it’s just because some people talk faster or not as strict (like not following all the rules). But it’s helped a ton to have a comp who speaks it fluently. Left to Right: E. Bird, E. Vergara, E. Sorensen and E. Nieto. Ok so martes/Tuesday, I was with Elder Waldvogel (from Utah) most of the day while he waited for his companion to get here and while I waited for Elder Puma to get packed. We made it to Betanzos in the afternoon and had lunch and then went to the few citas/appointments we had. We were hoping to visit Max, but he wasn´t home and we ended up teaching his two younger siblings...

2019-03-25: Staying in Betanzos!

L to R: 1st Counselor in Betanzos bishopric, E. Sorensen, and Bishop. Well... this week was pretty crazy, like really weird. It was the last week of the cambio/(transfer or 6-week assignment), and we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. My comp (Elder Vergara) and I planned to contact a ton more than normal during the week to find a lot more new investigators. Well martes/Tuesday after our district meeting, our zone leaders called us to a different room and told us that President is thinking about closing Betanzos (as in taking out the missionaries so there are no missionaries). So that really killed us. We explained that it shouldn´t be closed and why. They told us they would talk to President and the assistants and let us know what they say. That really killed us. We made it back to Betanzos and had a good day with all our citas/appointments. Wednesday was goofy. We woke up and were talking about what will happen if they do close our area. We both felt it wa...
